The programs that come with Client Access do not provide good data browsing functions. The 5250 Emulator program simply moves the traditional green screen into the Windows environment making the PC a terminal.  The AS400 Operations Navigator provides numerous powerful functions, but using it to browse data takes far more time and resources than is necessary. Furthermore, it is impossible to see the files in the libraries that do not show in Navigator's libraries list.

Client Access does include a great ODBC driver that can be used to access the AS/400 data at high speeds.  However, this requires some programming, and we did just that.  Polaris AS/400 Data Browser adds a user interface to the AS/400 ODBC driver and turns it into a data browser that is both quick and easy to use.
 

Select a database from the databases list to initialize the program, and you are ready to see all the data on your AS/400.  Enter a library name and file name, and then click on the Open button, you see the data.  When the data shows, you can more the columns, change their widths...  Searching is easy.  Simply pick a field from the fields list, enter the data you are looking for, and click on the Go button.  The program also provides a SQL statement editor that makes it easy to enter SQL statements.  If you know how to use SQL, you have all the flexibilities in choosing your data.
